Runaway freshwater crocodile found in Sydney backy
A RUNAWAY croc named Chainsaw has been discovered in a western Sydney backyard.
The baby freshwater crocodile was discovered basking in a Rooty Hill backyard by an astounded resident yesterday evening, the Australian Reptile Park said in a statement today.
The resident immediately trapped the 50cm-long reptile, believed to be an illegal runaway pet BCBG Dresses, under a laundry basket before seeking help from WIRES (the NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service).
WIRES held the slippery fellow in custody overnight before the Australian Reptile Park today offered to take care of him, the park’s Reptiles Supervisor Julie Mendezona said.
"Because he was found in a suburban backyard, we believe it’s probably an escaped illegal pet," Mendezona said.
If no one comes forward to claim the two-year-old croc, the park may keep it to educate visitors about the species.
Mendezona said their newest resident was "very feisty" and could reach two metres when fully grown.
"He has been named Chainsaw and looking at this row of sharp teeth Christian audigier Dresses, it’s easy to see why," Mendezona said.
